Several regulations and standards such as ASHRAE 110 and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1450, govern device life cycle and use. Legal provisions provide for sanctions in case of non-compliance.

Laboratory Fume Hoods Life Cycle

Laboratory safety assessment. An external, independent agency should run periodic assessments. It reviews equipment, lab and personal/collective protective equipment, emergency kits, ventilation, cleanliness, exit paths, chemical management, waste handling, signage, policies, training, and any other aspects related to safety, including the Laboratory Safety Standard Operating Procedures.

Laboratory energy assessment. The audit usually begins with a review of historical and current utility data and a benchmarking of the building’s energy use against similar facilities. The final report should contain a rating scorecard against the benchmark.

Advisory Subject Matter Experts can perform a Cold Eyes review to assess the current status of laboratory fume hoods in use. A non-binding, confidential report is released after the survey.

Periodic tests

During the life cycle of a fume hood, businesses are required to demonstrate that fume hood performance complies to latest ANSI/ASHRAE-110 and EN 14175 guidelines, these include:

  • As Manufactured (AM) test, also known as Type test
  • As Installed (AI) test, also known as Commissioning test
  • As Used (AU) test, also known as Periodic test

The estimated average time to complete the AI or the AU testing is around 2 to 4 working hours per hood, dependent upon laboratory/system conditions.

What is ASHRAE and ANSI/ASHRAE 110-2016

Chemical fume hoods are critical to laboratory safety; ineffective or poorly configured fume hoods can be harmful to personnel working with potentially dangerous chemicals.

ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) is dedicated “to serve humanity by advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and their allied fields”. This mission statement is enacted by developing standards and guidelines to guide HVAC industry and relevant applications, including laboratory fume hoods.

First published in 1985 and revised in 1995, ASHRAE Standard 110 provides a method of testing the performance of laboratory fume hoods. This method of testing applies to conventional, bypass, auxiliary air, and variable-air-volume (VAV) laboratory fume hoods.

OSHA 3404-11R Laboratory Safety Guidance and 29 CFR 1910.1450 Standard

US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) designed laboratory safety guidance 3404-11R which “is intended for supervisors, principal investigators and managers who have the primary responsibility for maintaining laboratories under their supervision as safe, healthy places to work and for ensuring that applicable health, safety and environmental regulations are followed.”
The guidance contains recommendations as well as descriptions of mandatory safety and health standards.

OSHA’s Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories standard, 29 CFR 1910.1450, requires that fume hoods be maintained and function properly when used, 29 CFR 1910.1450(e)(3)(iii).
