The Practical Role of IoT Solutions in Supporting (Lean) Autonomation in a Heat Treat Shop

Tuesday, October 15, 10:40am room 251B
Peter Sherwin Global Business Development Leader – Heat Treatment

Autonomation is often described as “automation with a human touch” and elevates the role of Furnace/Oven automation systems from primary automatic process control to providing additional supervisory ability. Operators are ultimately freed from certain mundane checks as the equipment will alert when an irregular situation occurs.

Industrial IoT Solutions support Autonomation by using inexpensive industrial-grade technology to wrap around existing automation solutions and provide a window into equipment status. This information can be shared and analyzed in real-time to aid faster decision-making in order to improve productivity and quality output. Data and trends can also be shared securely to Furnace/Oven suppliers to help improve equipment uptime and reduce service costs.

Beyond Thermal: The Technological Evolution of the Heat Treat Industry

Tuesday, October 15, 11:00am room 251B
Joe Clarke Business Development Manager | Heat Treatment

Industry 4.0 and IIOT aren’t exactly new terms even in an industry that at times, progresses slower than others. Within the past 2-3 years, there has been a significant increase in awareness amongst both Commercial and Captive Heat Treaters of this push to become more of a “smart factory” and be able to address some of the obstacles and issues they may be faced with as we progress into the next decade.

While the industry is indicating strong growth projections over the next couple of years, there is some uncertainty in the future economic conditions contributing to an indecision on what technology investments into their factory will maximize their return on investment. Despite the increased awareness of Industry 4.0 and desire to progress towards a “smart factory”, many do not realize the low cost and high return that many new technologies, solutions, and practices can have on the industry today.
