Multi-zone Plastic Extrusion Solution - MiniEM3

The MiniEM3 application is a powerful extrusion temperature control solution combining the industry-proven temperature control capabilities of the Mini8 multi-loop controller with the flexibility of the PenGUIn HMI panel. The MiniEM3 is a dynamic solution which is equally suited for new extruder control designs and the retrofitting of ageing control panels with multiple single loop controllers.

A typical plastic extruder line involves multiple zones of precise temperature control to keep raw plastic pellets at molten temperatures. The raw plastic pellets enter the barrel and come into contact with the barrel screw which spins to force the plastic forward through the heated barrel zones. The MiniEM3 application is specifically designed with the fast-paced world of plastics temperature control in mind.

The Mini8 controller and the PenGUIn HMI come to you preprogrammed and ready to go. The Mini8 controller is configured with the latest in temperature control technology with advanced PID auto-tune, custom cooling algorithms, and comprehensive alarm blocks. The PenGUIn HMI is programmed with trending and data logging, recipe management, security access, and full configuration interface.

Installing and commissioning the unit is as simple as following the MiniEM3 application installation guide, attaching your wiring, and applying power. The system is then ready for auto-tune and full operation.

Application Example

Control Panel Retrofit

The MiniEM3 application lends itself to fast and simple control panel retrofits. The retrofit process is as easy as cutting a hole in the door for the PenGUIn HMI, mounting the Mini8 controller on back panel DIN rail, and transferring the wires.

Once the retrofit is complete, the user will have the latest Control Solution.

When an engineer is designing a new control cabinet for an extruder he or she must make the decision between using discrete controls or a more centralized solution. The MiniEM3 application offers a pre-programmed centralized solution, discrete solutions are also available through Invensys Eurotherm

Application Options

Heating Only

The first option provides up to 24 highly accurate heat only control zones. This choice provides the user with the best combination of accurate heat only temperature control, recipe management, data trending and logging, and a comprehensive alarm strategy.

Heating Only with Current Monitoring

The second option provides all of the same options as the heating only selection but adds current monitoring and alarming. The current Monitoring option allows the user to monitor the health of the heating elements and alarm based on degraded performance.

Heating and Cooling

The third option offers both heating and cooling control. This selection makes use of Eurotherm’s custom oil, fan, or water based cooling algorithms.

Heating and Cooling with Current Monitoring

The fourth option available combines the best of all of the options. This selection provides the user with heating and cooling control as well as current monitoring.

Internal ‘Soft’ Wiring

The Eurotherm Mini8 is programmed using the iTools engineering software. This user friendly configuration program allows the owner the freedom to customize the programming beyond the standard functional settings, should they choose.
