Digital Communications Wiring
TIA/EIA-232, TIA/EIA-422 and TIA/EIA-485
(previously RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 and used here)

A typical computer has 1 or 2 serial ports which are called COM1 or COM2, are RS-232 and they physically look like 9 pin or 25 pin male "D" connectors. Please note, if you have an internal modem configured as COM1 or COM2, that serial port will be disabled for other purposes. An RS-232 serial port can communicate to one (1) Eurotherm instrument only.

If you wish to communicate to several instruments using 1 serial port in a multi-drop arrangement, then you need to use an an RS-232 to RS-422 or a RS-232 to RS-485 converter that can be an external or internal board in your computer.

If you wish to communicate to several instruments using 1 serial port, then you need to use an an RS-232 to RS-422 or a RS-232 to RS-485 converter that can be an external or internal board in your computer.

Before starting to wire a communications cable, please add the following soldered jumpers directly on your 9 pin or 25 pin connector that will be plugging into your standard RS-232 computer's serial port.

9 pin female connector 25 pin female connector
Solder jumper # 1 pins 1, 4, and 6 pins 6, 8, and 20
Solder jumper # 2 pins 7 and 8 pins 4 and 5

For information on ordering the RS-232 to RS-422/RS-485 converters shown on this page, click here.

The above wiring connections are required for standard communications. The DB-9 pin assignments shown above are not valid for all computers. For assignments specific to other machines, refer to the owners manual or contact your local computer supply company. We strongly suggest that you test your wiring installation with a software program such as Eurotherm's Sampler program.
